Common Questions
What formula does the Percentage Calculator use?
Percent of value = value × percent / 100. Value as a percent of total = value / total. Increase or decrease = value × (1 ± percent / 100).
How do you calculate a percentage increase?
To calculate a percentage increase, subtract the original value from the new value to find the absolute difference. Then, divide that absolute difference by the original value and multiply the result by 100.
Is a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease the same original number?
No. If you increase $100 by 50%, you get $150. If you then decrease that $150 by 50%, you lose $75, leaving you with $75. Percentage changes always apply to the newest baseline number, not the original starting point.
